Webinar Description

This was a special screening of Gen Z Mental Health: Climate Stories, followed by a live panel with Dr. Kris Karnauskas (climate scientist, CU Boulder), Dr. Joanna Arch (Psychologist, CU Boulder), and Tehya Jennett (Climate Activist and Filmmaker) organized by CIRES Education & Outreach and the Renee Crown Institute.

Gen Z Mental Health: Climate Emotions is a short documentary that explores the mental health impacts of young adults worldwide as a result of the climate crisis, and considers what resilience means when fighting for the right to a livable planet. The film captures the emotions of a generation that may be frightened, but is anything but hopeless, saving room for stories of love, community connections, and healing. Visit the film site. Presenter

Tehya Jennett is a youth climate activist and filmmaker with roots in the climate storytelling space. Tehya is a Co-owner of and Green Producer for Stranded Astronaut Productions, an artist collective and production house that specializes in social impact content. Tehya worked as a Sustainability Coordinator on numerous film/TV productions and produced the award-winning cli-fi short, Stomach of the Earth (2020). Gen Z Mental Health: Climate Stories (2022) is their directorial debut focusing on the mental health impacts of the climate crisis.

Dr. Kris Karnaskaus is a fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) and an Associate Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at the University of Colorado Boulder, with secondary faculty appointments in the CU School of Medicine and the Colorado School of Public Health. His work focuses on the dynamics of the coupled Earth system toward useful predictions of impacts ranging from marine ecosystems to human health.

Joanna Arch - Our work focuses on understanding and developing interventions for anxiety disorders, stress, and coping with cancer. We study mindfulness and acceptance-based as well as exposure-based behavioral interventions.
