  • Great introduction to social aspects of climate change for middle school students.
  • This resource can also be used for younger students (4th and 5th grade).
  • If teachers are using this lesson as a part of a unit on a specific classification of animals, they could narrow the focus of marine animals to, for instance, mammals, fish, or invertebrates.

About the Pedagogy

  • Students watch a virtual field trip/video about coastal communities and climate change, which emphasizes stewardship and advocacy as well as the blend of art and science.
  • They answer questions while watching the video and then research a marine animal to create a poster that they present to classmates.
  • The last step is to learn more about and discuss actions they can take to help our oceans.
  • This lesson takes place over three periods focused on the 3 activities (the video and Q&A, the poster/research, and the presentations and extensions).
  • The lesson includes a video, worksheet, and a project-based activity that can be done either individually or with a group.
  • The teacher's guide provides additional resources for the teacher to extend the lesson and discuss other climate related topics as well.
  • No prerequisites are required, it is a project-based lesson that leads students to want to be stewards of the land/ocean.
  • There is a focus on climate justice and engaging marginalized communities in marine science and stewardship.
