John Smith, Kristen Poppleton, Climate Generation
This resource examines ways humans interact with the environment and how we impact climate change in everyday life through the foods we eat, the transportation we use, and the energy we consume. Each lesson offers a project that involves data collection, whether it's recording temperature, speed, observing human behaviors and activities, or tracking the energy associated with our food consumption/ waste.
This activity can take between 2-7 55 minute class periods (multiple options).

Teaching Tips
- Educators will need time to determine which lessons will be used. This resource could easily be split up into 5 different resources to make it more user-friendly. Might be worth listing a few remote options for classrooms to connect with folks in cases where these personnel/workforce are not local.
- The cost is minimal and uses resources already found in the classroom.
- The lessons include mental health breaks and there is awareness demonstrated about difficult topics including the issues with food and fossil fuel usage.
About the Content
- This activity includes 5 different energy-based climate change solutions, including solar energy, wind energy, food and agriculture, transportation and energy communication/behavior change.
- The science is relatable to the age group and uses real-life examples to bring climate solutions to the classroom. Background materials are comprehensive and allow teachers to expand on lessons if class interest is present.
- Passed initial science review – expert science review pending.
About the Pedagogy
- This resource includes 5 different "options" which are essentially all stand-alone lessons that each include objectives, resources, guiding questions, length of time to complete, and extensions.
- Each lesson involves some sort of project that may or may not be suitable depending on the weather.
- Some of the projects might need modification depending on the size of the school/community. For example, in a rural area with little traffic, it might be more difficult to observe traffic.
- Learning outcomes include students being able to name two climate change solutions that their school can take part in, 2-3 green careers that contribute to climate change solutions, and being able to prioritize appropriate climate actions for their school.
- The lessons include a mixture of hands-on activities, group, team-based projects, and experiments. The guide and sequence are comprehensive and clear.
- This resource engages students in using scientific data.
