Webinar Description

Many geoscientists are working to make our discipline more equitable and inclusive, but there is widespread concern that those efforts will not be valued professionally. In this webinar, a panel of geoscience faculty and administrators from a range of institution types will share their experiences from their own promotion and tenure pathways. Discussion will include specific recommendations for younger colleagues near the start of their careers, such as how to align professional efforts with institutions' mission and vision statements. For more senior colleagues who are in positions of evaluating promotion and tenure files, panelists will offer actions that can help improve promotion and tenure procedures and policies so that impactful diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are recognized. We encourage all to attend, across career stages, position status, and institution types.

A summary of the information, ideas, and opinions shared during this panel is available on the Panel Synthesis page.

Webinar goals

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify evidence that professional efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion can be undervalued in promotion and tenure decisions;
  2. Align diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts with their institution's stated values (e.g., mission and vision statements); and
  3. Develop policies and procedures to improve promotion and tenure evaluations of faculty that work to foster a more equitable and diverse geosciences field.
