Climate Change Education for Community Colleges in Wisconsin
The Madison Area Technical College (Madison College) proposes to develop a Climate and Climate Change course suitable for undergraduates. To accomplish this goal efficiently, we will partner with the University of Wisconsin-Madison staff and share development ideas. The course will expand on a past NASA-funded Climate Literacy project (NRA FY 2009 No. NNLO9ZB1005C, awarded to the UW-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)) that trained grade six through twelve teachers to be Climate Ambassadors (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/climatechange). Course presentation will be in an on-line format and the course credits will transfer between the two institutions. One or two students from each class will participate in an internship either after or during the class with MPower ChaMpions Program, part of a local sustainability project, furthering their understanding about alternative energy sources, energy efficiency and sustainability practices and how those concepts relate to climate and climate change. The interns will take concepts learned in the class out into the local business and school community.
