Technical Details
Teaching Tips
- Keep in mind that the art pieces in this lesson will need to either be printed or projected.
- Set expectations very intentionally for this lesson and ask students to really engage with the art and let their classmates do so as well. This lesson has the potential to help students with emotionally processing climate change.
- Consider follow-up activities that encourage students to observe and create other data visualizations. If you'd like more up-to-date or additional art/sci graphs, visit: https://www.environmentalgraphiti.org
About the Content
- There are references and background notes given for all four of the graphs that were used to create the art pieces. This is a lesson that a science or art teacher could provide and could also be co-taught.
- Passed initial science review - expert science review pending.
About the Pedagogy
- This activity adds art into science to show that there are different avenues to relay the message to audiences. This is more of an activity that involves critiquing and evaluating the art that was made.
- To extend the lesson, consider asking students to create their own art from different graphs found.
- This lesson would be a great follow-up to a graphing or data activity because it helps students consider how to communicate data using creativity.
- This resource engages students in using scientific data.
