Workshop Outcomes

The following collections of materials were submitted by faculty participants at the 2012 workshop, Systems, Society, Sustainability and the Geosciences. These faculty represented a range of disciplines, including the natural and physical sciences, economics, and humanities. The collections illustrate approaches for teaching sustainability in the context of different disciplines, course types and institutions. See the workshop synthesis to learn more about the workshop.

Sustainability Courses
Courses for both upper level and introductory level that address various aspects of sustainability, science and societal issues.

Sustainability Activities
These activities use a wide array of pedagogic approaches to address topics including water, transportation, energy, the local environment and philosophy.

Sustainability Essays
Participants shared their approaches to teaching sustainability in an interdisciplinary context and ideas for exploring opportunities for enhancing the integration of geoscience and sustainability.

Key Concepts for Teaching Sustainability
Workshop participants worked with others in their discipline to generate a list of key concepts that are essential for students to learn and also allow opportunities to bring sustainability into the curricula.
