Living Landscapes: Culture, Climate Science, and Education in Tribal Communities

Adrian Leighton

Salish Kootenai College

The SKC project, "Living Landscapes," focuses on development of a college-level climate change course specifically centered on remote sensing, a similar high school learning unit and companion social software tools. These courses provide relevant place and culture-based climate science educational resources along with a social network to engage students and inspire them to consider careers in climate science and other STEM disciplines. Tribal cultural advisors are actively engaged in the project to provide a blending of Traditional knowledge and current climate science research. The project also creates mentoring relationships between NASA climate scientists and tribal students attending SKC and local high schools to further encourage careers in climate science. This activity supports the CoSTEM priority areas to enhance the STEM experience of undergraduate students, and better serve groups historically under-represented in STEM fields.
