Global Climate Change Institute for Teachers (GccIFT)

William Schoenfeld

Western Oregon Univ

Expand the content scope of our teacher institutes, while also increasing the number of teachers served in both the workshops and our follow-up classroom visits. The primary focus thus far has been grades 3-5, but we want to expand the breadth of our audience by offering distinct opportunities for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 teachers. The expanded content scope will include a comprehensive K-8 NASA-based curriculum (with a teacher's guide) aligned with state, national and the Climate Literacy Standards, a complete review of children's climate change literature (we have a children's literature specialist on the team), and expanded hands-on activities and experiments.

Many fundamental physical principles governing the climate system are demonstrated via scientific inquiry. All of our activities are age appropriate, with some of them infusing modern technology, while others employ low cost materials accessible to every budget. An additional feature we will incorporate into our future institutes are make-and-take sessions where we provide materials and guidance, and the teachers themselves fabricate the equipment they'll use in their classrooms. Incorporation of materials from prior NASA Education fund.
