2:20 - 3:00 Motivating Students in Large Classes (Acrobat (PDF) 2.4MB Dec5 12): Carol Ormand

Following a brief presentation on the research about motivation, participants will reflect on opportunities to incorporate motivating tactics in their own teaching, and share these ideas with colleagues who teach in similar settings.

3:20 - 4:20 Assessing Student Learning in Large Classes (Acrobat (PDF) 1.5MB Dec5 12): Randy Richardson

"What do you want students to be able to do?" "How will you know that students can do what you want them to be able to do?" Assessment addresses these key questions. In this session we'll look at one-minute-essays, conceptests, lecture tutorials, clickers, multiple choice / Scantron exams, and cooperative exams. Participants will choose one assessment type and begin to see how to apply it in a large class. We'll then break into groups based on assessment type and share and revise our plans.

4:20 - 4:45 Classroom Management (Acrobat (PDF) 1.1MB Dec5 12): Randy Richardson

Classroom management can make or break the large classroom experience. We'll look at how to use the syllabus to set expectations, how to deal with disruptive behavior, and how to re-think exams.

4:45 - 5:00 Wrap-up and workshop evaluation
