Overview of the on-line workshop

Format

For faculty who are unable to travel to Georgia Southern University for our face-to-face Course Design Workshop, we are offering, for the first time, an on-line version of the workshop that will be conducted as a distance learning course beginning on May 23 and concluding on June 23. All assignments and supporting material will be available on the web at the Cutting Edge web site.

Goals:

During the on-line workshop, participants will:

  • Develop a skeleton course syllabus.
  • Outline a series of activities, assignments, and assessments that will help students achieve the goals set for the course.
  • Make progress toward developing at least one assignment or activitiy using one of the techniques described in the on-line teaching methods module.
  • Develop an action plan for implementing the new course.
  • Contribute to the Cutting Edge goals/syllabus database. Participants will also be invited to participate in a email list for workshop participants.

Format and requirements:

On-line workshop participants will:

  • Complete five assignments, with postings to be made to the discussion board on May 23, May 27, June 6, June 13, and June 20.
  • Provide feedback to other participants within two days of each assignment deadline.
  • Receive feedback from workshop leaders within one day of posting of participant responses.
  • Take part in optional synchronous discussions on Fridays during the on-line workshop.
  • Consult individuallly with workshop leaders via e-mail or phone (optional).
  • Contribute to the Cutting Edge goals/syllabus database.

Dates

Participants will make their first workshop postings to the on-line discussion board on Monday, May 23 and their last postings on Wednesday, June 23. Successful applicants must agree to participate for the full duration of the on-line workshop.

Eligibility and application instructions

Applicants for this workshop must hold a faculty position at a two- or four-year college or university. We welcome applications from all academic ranks. The on-line workshop is limited to 15 participants, and the final list of participants will be established with the goal of assembling a group representing a wide range of experiences, educational environments, and specialties. Application must be made on line by March 15, 2005 and successful applicants will be notified by April 1, 2005.

Cost

The National Science Foundation provides funding for the operational costs of the workshop. To be supported by these funds, a participant must be either a US citizen, a permanent resident, or in the employ of a US institution. If you don't meet these requirements and are interested in participating in this workshop at your own expense, please contact the workshop conveners.
