Teaching Tips | Science | Pedagogy | Technical Details

Teaching Tips

  • Easy to follow teaching tips, discussion topics, printable background material, supporting and extension opportunities are provided in several links.
  • Discussion on the reliability of models predicating the future is advised.

About the Science

  • Robust animations of changing drought conditions first in the US then the world 2010-2018. Includes a model of drought projections through 2095. Students make observations and develop conclusions about droughts and climate change. Plenty of supporting materials provided through links to companion animations and activities. A teacher may want more opportunity to discuss the validity of models but this is not provided.
  • Passed initial science review - expert science review pending.

About the Pedagogy

  • This resource includes animations of US drought conditions, global drought conditions, and US drought projections into the future. The site also has teaching tips, discussion questions, and other pedagogical support to help teachers use these animations in their classrooms. This would be a good way to have students learn about drought while exploring animations of real scientific data.
  • Prior knowledge is explored before content is reviewed. Discussion questions provoke transfer of knowledge to global issues and presentation of prediction animation provide opportunity to discuss model usefulness in policy making and other life decisions.

Technical Details/Ease of Use

  • Animation can be downloaded for use by students or teachers outside internet issues.
  • No special technological skills are required.
