This photo shows the dried up remnants of Owens Lake, the first in a chain of closed-basin lakes fed by runoff from the Sierra Nevada mountains. During the Pleistocene, wetter climatic conditions led Owens Lake to overflow its basin, with water eventually reaching all the way to Death Valley.
