Subduction cartoon

This illustration depicts a tectonic plate as it is subducted. The dots on the image illustrate likely earthquake activity. The boundaries of the transition zone can be seen to deflect upwards and downwards because of the altered temperature/pressure profile inside the downgoing slab.
