Sean Tvelia is a professor of geology and Academic Chair of the department of physical sciences at Suffolk County Community College where his primary teaching responsibility includes the evolution of Earth and life, physical geology, planetary geology, and geologic field studies. His research interests involve the relationship between glacial hydrology and glaciotectonic processes in the development of eastern Long Island and the geocultural development of Long Island’s indigenous peoples. In the classroom his focus is on the development of active learning and metacognitive strategies that immerse students in direct, hands-on experiential activities in the sciences. Through the SAGE 2YC project he has led numerous workshops with local college, university, and K-12 faculty that focus on increasing participation and improving student success within courses and programs. Sean is the director of the NSF-sponsored I-SUCCESS program and co-PI for a collaborative research grant studying the timing and mechanism of collapse of the cordillera in SW North America. Sean is an active member of the Geo2YC division. He has chaired the Professional Development committee, currently serves on the ad hoc sections committee, and is an active facilitator for the Traveling Workshop. Outside of academia he is a founding member of the board of the Hamptons observatory, serves on the Boards of the Southold Indian Museum, and consults for the Grave Warrior Protection Society for the Shinnecock nation.
