This figure shows a projection of US energy consumption from 2013 through 2040. This projection is from the US Energy Information Administration, published in 2014. The figure shows the total U.S. consumption of liquid petroleum fuels is projected to grow from 35.9 quadrillion Btu (19.0 million barrels per day) in 2013 to 36.2 quadrillion Btu (19.3 million barrels per day) in 2040 in the AEO2015 Reference case. The transportation sector is projected to continue to dominate demand for liquid fuels, although its share (as measured by energy content) will decrease it will be made up for by the rise of natural gas use by 2040.
